More often than not, finding a psychotherapist can take some trials and errors, before we find “the one” therapist for ourselves. And that’s absolutely okay! After all it’s a one-of-a-kind intimate relationship where we trust and share our deepest vulnerabilities. Being able to feel safe, accepted and understood by the therapist, facilitates free expression, and authentic connection.
Having said that, a few initial steps can still be helpful to consider before making the first call of approaching a therapist who could be suitable for you. Here are a few questions that you may ask yourself?
Why am I seeking therapy?
What am I looking to achieve from therapy?
What are the logistical details of seeking therapy that I need to think about? (Fee structure, time commitment, spatial preference, mode of communication etc)
Once you have a brief understanding of these things for yourself, begin searching for therapists who you feel would be able to match these needs. Look up their profiles, and background. You can reach out to them, and also openly clarify your doubts if you have any about their approaches, fees, expectations and process of therapy.
If you don’t have clear answers to these questions, you could book an appointment with a psychotherapist to help you explore and find your answers.
